League bans referee for life after missed goal call: You can't make this stuff up
The KHL's flexing their muscles again, except this time it's on their own referee who missed a goal call during a match between the SKA St. Petersburg and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.
The team that was in question? SKA St. Petersburg.
Needless to say, the ramifications of his mistake would be monstrous.
You can see the puck entered the goal through a gap on the side of the net.
The goal was upheld by the referee:
The KHL's Referees Are Vulnerable In Comparison to the NHL's
In what is quite a contradictory nature of the game, the KHL referees have no union to protect them from retaliation from the league.
Whereas the NHL referees have union protection, which helps shield them from scrutiny often, all the while protecting their careers on the ice.
If you were to criticize a referee as a coach or a player, Commissioner Gary Bettman will even step in to safeguard one of his 70 officials (35 referees, 35 linesmen).
The stark contrast for officials in the KHL is indicative of high turnover in the ranks, and it goes to show how high-quality the product in the NHL is on the ice compared to the
second-best league in the world.
