The immense popularity of the Detroit Red Wings is frequently reinforced by the club's appearances in pop culture references.

You've seen the Red Wings in The Simpsons and South Park. Cameron famously sported a Gordie Howe Red Wings jersey on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Now, the Red Wings are gaining status as an icon of the K-pop stage. In a TikTok video on her personal site, K-pop sensation Jeon Somi is shown backstage preparing for a concert, wearing a Red Wings road jersey. Whose jersey is it? Dylan Larkin? Moritz Seider? Lucas Raymond? Surprisingly, it's an old Dennis Cholowski number 21 jersey.
Is Somi a Red Wings fan? While she doesn't explicitly state it, she was born in Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit River from Joe Louis Arena. Another curiosity is the Red Wings organization's role in the South Korean team during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, coached by long-time Grand Rapids Griffins assistant Jim Paek.
Somi, the child of a Canadian-born father and a South Korean-born mother, still holds a Canadian passport. She moved to South Korea at six months old and entered K-pop as part of a group before branching out into a solo career. In 2021, she performed in front of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and last year, the New York Mets invited her to throw out the first pitch at Citi Field. If you're a Toronto Maple Leafs fan considering giving her the business for sporting a Wings jersey, think twice, Somi is a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
If you're curious about K-pop or Somi, her new single, "Ice Cream," will be released on August 2.
