While the current version of the Detroit Red Wings are stuck in the doldrums, one comfort that fans use to reassure themselves that the pain and patience will all be worth it one day is the re-stocked prospect cupboard.
GM Steve Yzerman has done a remarkable job in rebuilding Detroit's prospect system after it was completely gutted and mismanaged by former general manager Ken Holland, who left the franchise shortly after Yzerman's return in April of 2019.
One such prospect is Russian native Dmitri Buchelnikov, who the Red Wings made their 2nd round selection in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
He currently plays for HC Vityaz in the Kontinental Hockey League, and he came through with the game-winning goal for his club in today's game against Dynamo Moscow with just 81 seconds left in regulation.
However, one thing to keep in mind is that many of these Red Wings prospects aren't exactly lighting it up in the minors.
While there are more than a few Red Wings fans who have a bone to pick with the Red Wings GM regarding the speed of the team's rebuild, Yzerman made it clear earlier this year that his goal is to build a consistent playoff contender and is doing it through the Draft.
