Red Wings sign UFA defenseman Erik Gustafsson to two-year contract
Today, the Detroit Red Wings announced the signing of defenseman Erik Gustafsson to a two-year contract worth an average annual value of $2 million.
Gustafsson, 32, joins the Red Wings after a productive season with the New York Rangers in 2023-24, where he contributed 31 points (6 goals, 25 assists) in 76 regular-season games and added three assists during their playoff run to the Eastern Conference Final.
Originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2012, Gustafsson has amassed 222 points (45 goals, 177 assists) in 455 NHL games with several teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, and Montreal Canadiens. His career highlights include reaching the Stanley Cup Final with the Canadiens in 2021.
Internationally, the native of Nynäshamn, Sweden, has represented his country at multiple IIHF World Championships, winning a gold medal in 2018. Gustafsson's signing brings experience and offensive skill to Detroit's blue line as they bolster their roster for the upcoming seasons.
