Big potential ahead with Ondrej Becher in the third-round of the NHL draft
When the Detroit Red Wings made their third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, they selected forward Ondrej Becher, whose remarkable improvement caught their eye.
Becher finished the 2023-24 WHL season with 96 points, doubling his previous year's production. This intrigued the Wings, who see the 20-year-old Czech winger as a late bloomer with NHL scoring potential.
Dan Cleary, the Red Wings' assistant director of player development, praised Becher's skills during the team's July development camp, noting,
"I got to see Bechs play the past few world juniors. We'll see what transpires in terms of where he is going to play."
Standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 187 pounds, Becher spent the past two seasons with the Prince George Cougars. After an average first season, he broke out with 32 goals and 64 assists in 58 games, plus 19 points in 15 playoff games. His focus on defensive play significantly enhanced his game.
"I think I started playing more defensively, so I became a two-way player," he said.
Selected 80th overall, Becher watched the draft from his home in Czechia.
"It was very exciting," he said. "I know the Red Wings are an amazing organization with great history. I'm really proud to be part of this amazing organization."
Now a developed two-way playmaker, Becher is eager to showcase his skills and prove himself at the next level.
