Coach Derek Lalonde knows exactly what the Detroit Red Wings need to focus on for the 2024-25 season.

Despite being a top-10 team in goals scored, the Red Wings struggled defensively, finishing in the bottom 10 in goals-against. Lalonde emphasized that improving their defensive play is crucial for the team's success.
Speaking at the Street Hockey in the D: Summer Series, Derek Lalonde expressed satisfaction with GM Steve Yzerman's offseason moves. The re-signing of Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko and the addition of goalie Cam Talbot were seen as positive steps in addressing previous gaps. Lalonde noted that the team has progressed each year, and the goal is to continue building on that momentum.
Last season, the Red Wings fell just one point short of a playoff spot, largely due to their poor defensive record. They finished 24th in goals against per game (3.33). The importance of solid defensive play is underscored by the fact that no team in the bottom 10 for goals made the playoffs, while nine of the top 10 teams in this category did.
Lalonde highlighted the need for tighter defense from both the blue line and forwards and more consistent goaltending. The Red Wings will have a competitive goaltending situation with Cam Talbot, Jack Campbell, and potentially other options vying for the starting role. Additionally, the departure of Jake Walman and Shayne Gostisbehere means that younger defensemen like Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson, along with new addition William Lagesson, will be expected to step up.
Lalonde acknowledged that with higher expectations, the team must aim for a strong start and improved overall performance.
