Detroit Red Wings players sound off after dramatic last-minute win vs. Blue Jackets
The Detroit Red Wings earned a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets thanks to Jonatan Berggren's goal with 35 seconds left, giving them their 3rd straight win.
Just when it seemed like the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets were heading for overtime, Jonatan Berggren demonstrated his flair for the dramatic.
Berggren exited the penalty box at the perfect time as Tyler Motte fed him the puck, springing him on a breakaway. His shot beat goaltender Elvis Merzlikins with 35 seconds left in the 3rd period to give the Red Wings a late 5-4 lead:
He had been tabbed by head Coach Todd McLellan to serve the penalty for delay-of-game after Detroit's unsuccessful challenge for goalie interference on the Blue Jackets' tying goal with less than three minutes left in regulation
It was Berggren's 2nd breakaway goal in as many games; he also scored on a breakaway on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena.
Alex DeBrincat, who scored a power play goal in the 1st period to give Detroit the 3-1 lead, said that he and the rest of his Red Wings teammates refused to quit despite a pair of comeback attempts by the Blue Jackets.
There's no quit. We give up that late goal, our PK does a great job and obviously Berggy scores after that. I think we're not getting down on the bench when we have a momentum swing.
We just keep working to get that momentum back and it's been going well for us.
Detroit's goal scorers also included Patrick Kane, Dylan Larkin and Erik Gustafsson. Like Berggren, Larkin's goal was his 2nd in as many games, while Gustafsson picked up his 1st goal since joining the Red Wings over the summer.
