Former Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry has shared his controversial take on Edmonton Oilers forward Corey Perry, who was a thorn in Detroit's side for years.

Former Hockey Night in Canada host and NHL head coach Don Cherry now has his own podcast where he opines on a variety of subjects.

And fans of the Detroit Red Wings may find themselves divided on what Cherry had to say about a former bitter rival of the team.

Fans still remember what a thorn that Corey Perry was in Detroit's side for years as a member of the Anaheim Ducks, starting with their matchup in the 2007 Western Conference Finals.

According to Cherry on his Grapevine podcast, Perry should have a spot reserved for him in the Hockey Hall of Fame once his NHL career comes to a close.

Corey Perry won a Memorial Cup, a World Junior gold medal, two Olympic gold medals, a Stanley Cup, a Hart Trophy, Rocket Richard Trophy, played over 1,300 games, has over 430 goals, has over 920 points, over 1,400 minutes in penalties, which is pretty good, over 85 fights.

When told by his co-host and son Tim that the Hockey Hall of Fame may not favor players like Perry, the elder Cherry responded by saying Perry is more of a Dale Hunter-type of player, referencing the hard-nosed former captain of the Washington Capitals (who the Red Wings swept in the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals).

After leaving Anaheim, Perry has played for the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Chicago Blackhawks; he now plays for the Edmonton Oilers.

He's also been on the losing side in the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

Corey Perry lost a bout to Pavel Datsyuk on Opening Night in 2010

Red Wings fans won't ever forget when Perry, while still with the Ducks, got into a scrap with forward Pavel Datsyuk on Opening Night at Joe Louis Arena in October 2010.

The sell-out crowd roared with approval as Datsyuk, the recent recipient of the Lady Byng Award for gentlemanly on-ice play, handily defeated Perry in the bout.
