We are evaluating the Pittsburgh Penguins' offseason in the Eastern Conference of the NHL compared to other teams like the Detroit Red Wings.

Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations and GM Kyle Dubas emphasizes comparing his team to its division rivals as playoff berths and success begin there. This metric forms the basis for assessing the Penguin's current state.
Divisional Competition and Penguins' Moves
The Penguins must outperform divisional rivals to make and succeed in the playoffs. Let's evaluate the Penguins' offseason within the Metro Division context and against wild-card contenders like the Detroit Red Wings.
Skipping the top two teams in the division (New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes), the primary competition has been busy:
New Jersey Devils: Added coach Sheldon Keefe, goalie Jacob Markstrom, and defenseman Brett Pesce.
Ottawa Senators: Added goalie Linus Ullmark and defenseman Nick Jensen
Philadelphia Flyers: Acquired Matvei Michkov and cleared cap space by buying out Cam Atkinson.
Washington Capitals: Added Chychrun, goalie Logan Thompson, and forward Andrew Mangiapane.
Detroit Red Wings: Retained Patrick Kane, signed Vladimir Tarasenko, defenseman Erik Gustafsson, goalies Cam Talbot, and Jack Campbell.
Penguins' Perspective
The Penguins have stars like Sidney Crosby, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, and Bryan Rust, but their supporting cast faces challenges. Dubas made moves, including acquiring Kevin Hayes and Reilly Smith, but these haven't significantly boosted the team.
Kevin Allen views the Penguins as a team with aging stars and eroding depth. Jon Bailey criticizes their inconsistent goaltending and slow bottom six. James Nichols notes that the aging roster and lack of significant additions predict a playoff miss.
With steps backward in the lineup and a rebuilding prospect pool, a 2025 lottery pick seems likelier than a postseason appearance for the Penguins.
The other GMs made big moves to upgrade their teams, especially the Detroit Red Wings. Who do you think will win the conference this year?
