Jakub Vrána Hits Waivers: A Tough Turn for the Former Red Wings Forward

Jakub Vrána, a former forward for the Detroit Red Wings has been placed on NHL waivers by the Washington Capitals prior to game against the New York Rangers.
The news, reported by Elliotte Friedman at 2 p.m, offers insight into what has been a rough season for the 29-year-old ex-Red Wing.
Vrána was drafted 13th overall by the Capitals in 2014 and is in his second stint with the team after signing a minimum-salary contract worth $775,000 for the 2024-25 season.
If Vrána clears waivers, he won't be sent down to the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears right away.
The Capitals will have a 30-day window to send him to the minors without needing waivers again.
This move could be purely strategic by the Capitals to manage their salary cap as the trade deadline approaches on Friday, March 7.
But for Vrána, he is available to all NHL organizations and could be seeing his fourth NHL home within his 11-year career.
After earning a spot with the Capitals through a professional tryout offer during training camp this summer, Vrána showed he still has some spark.
In 26 games, he put up 7 goals and 4 assists for a solid 11 points.

Jakub Vrana contract breakdown

That's not bad for a bottom-six forward averaging just 9 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time per game.
He hasn't had opportunity to earn a steady role on Washington's high-powered offense lead by Alex Ovechkin, which leads the league.
Since the start of 2025, he's only played three times, spending most of his days as a healthy scratch.
Vrána's one-way deal means he gets paid the same whether he's in the NHL or AHL, but it's clear he'd rather be on the ice than in the press box.
Could an NHL team in need of a forward who's wanting opportunity claim him? Such as the Detroit Red Wings, who have been battling injuries of key forwards.
Vrana could return home to his old roots in Detroit, or find another organization, the next 24hrs will determine his fate.
