After the Detroit Red Wings chose not to retain goaltender James Reimer during the offseason, there was a notable opening in the crease.
General manager Steve Yzerman filled that opening by inking free-agent veteran Cam Talbot to a 2-year contract, and to this point, he's been responsible for getting the Red Wings several points in the standings with his performances.
And he finds himself in the top-5 amongst his goaltending peers in one particular statistic.
Per Jesse Granger of The Athletic, Talbot is 3rd overall among all NHL goalies in save percentage from high-danger scoring changes.
Prior to Saturday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings honored Talbot for having reached the 500-games played threshold in his career.
He was presented with a silver stick along with a gifted trip to Napa Valley for him and his family, who was on hand to help him celebrate the honour.
Prior to his time with the Red Wings, Talbot began his career as backup to New York Rangers Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist.
He then played for the Edmonton Oilers, helping them reach the postseason in 2017 for the first time since 2006. Eventually, he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers and later played for the Calgary Flames before signing with the Minnesota Wild.
He's since played for the Red Wings' divisional foe Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings before joining Detroit in July 2024.
