The Detroit Red Wings announced a significant shift in leadership yesterday, as GM Steve Yzerman dismissed head coach Derek Lalonde along with assistant coach Bob Boughner.
Coming back to Detroit to take the head coaching job is former Stanley Cup-winning assistant Coach Todd McLellan, who helped Detroit to its most recent championship as an assistant in 2008 under Mike Babcock.
Joining him in Detroit is his longtime assistant, former Chicago Blackhawks defenseman and head coach Trent Yawney.
As the team gathered for practice this morning at Little Caesars Arena, McLellan's initial line combinations became clear for his 1st game behind the bench against the Toronto Maple Leafs (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
Both Simon Edvinsson and Ben Chiarot, who have missed the last several combined games with injuries, are expected back in the lineup. Meanwhile, Tyler Motte and Albert Johansson are scratched.
Per MLive beat writer Ansar Khan, McLellan's inaugural lineup combinations for tonight's game are as follows:
Tarasenko - Larkin - Raymond
DeBrincat - Copp - Kane
Rasmussen - Compher - Fischer
Veleno - Kasper - Berggren
Edvinsson - Seider
Chiarot - Petry
Gustafsson - Holl
It's officially a new era for the Red Wings, who felt that they had stagnated under the leadership of now-former head coach Derek Lalonde.
McLellan arrives with a 598-412-134 record as a head coach with the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings.
