The Detroit Red Wings held their 1st full practice under new coach Todd McLellan, who had a blunt demand for his players. And now, Patrick Kane is reacting.

After Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a major move behind the bench by firing Derek Lalonde (and assistant coach Bob Boughner) and replacing them with Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney, the latter pair of names didn't have time to run a full practice session.

Both McLellan and Yawney oversaw a quick session on the ice prior to Friday's 5-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in which several of the defensive errors that have plagued the Red Wings all year long resurfaced.

But yesterday, Detroit's new-look coaching staff was able to run their first official practice session, and several areas of concern were worked on, specifically the penalty killing; the session also included a sprint around Detroit's practice rink inside Little Caesars Arena.

But there was one particular moment from the skate that stood out, when McLellan barked a simple and attention-grabbing order at his players.

Just play f***ing hockey, you've done it your entire lives!

Patrick Kane, a future Hall of Fame forward who hasn't been able to replicate his near point-per-game scoring pace of last year, had a simple reaction to his new head coach's demand.

I think he's trying to make the game simple for us. Where you're just going out there and playing. I think most of the time if you're playing hard and skating hard and maybe if you make a mistake or two, if you're still working then sometimes that covers that up a little bit.

I think that's a good way to play too. Not thinking to much and you're just playing off of instinct. Overall, just make the game a little simpler for us.

Kane and the Red Wings take on Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in a late afternoon matchup at Little Caesars Arena (5:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, ESPN+, 97.1 The Ticket).
