Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon was given the start against the Oilers and he came through with a clutch 45-saver performance, picking up the win.

The Detroit Red Wings decided to give Alex Lyon his 1st start in the crease since January 21 last night against the Edmonton Oilers.

And while a 1st period blunder resulted in a 2-0 lead for the Oilers as both Lyon and his teammates failed to coral the puck in the crease, things immediately turned for the better afterward.

Lyon and the Red Wings defeated the Oilers 3-2 in a shootout, winning their 4th straight game. And it was a 45-save performance from Lyon that helped make it possible.

Lyon robbed both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl multiple times during regulation and in overtime, and also stopped McDavid in the shootout.

McLellan, who opted to start Lyon over former Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot who had won his last 3 straight games, had high praise for Lyon's performance.

Alex was obviously a key to the victory. He faced a lot of shots. Not all of them dangerous but there were some succession type shots that he had to be alert and get us some whistles, and when we broke down, that's why goalies wear the same-colored jerseys as everybody else.

He's there to provide the security and he did that.

Said Lyon himself:

You never want to give up a goal like that in the first, when you have a chance to cover it and kind of inflict harm on yourself. Maybe good motivation too, and maybe kind of find that next level to shut it down. That was our mindset to try to give the guys a chance after that, and I'm just happy it worked out against such a good team.
