The Detroit Red Wings could have the chance to pick up a former 40 goal scorer this summer if things don't work out with his current team.
The Detroit Red Wings have not had a 40 goal scorer in their lineup since Marrian Hossa's lone year with the team in 2008-09.
What are the chances that GM Steve Yzerman tries to change that this summer?
Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser, who is coming off his 1st 40 goal year, is a pending free agent at year's end. He's in the final year of 3-year, $19.95 million deal carrying an AAV (average annual value) of $6.65 million.
Right now, there's been little progress on a new contract for Boeser and the Canucks.
Per The Athletic, the Canucks are reportedly going to be taking things right down to the last minute with their negotiations.
For now, the Canucks are taking things down to the wire with Boeser. A team source indicated that the dynamics surrounding Boeser and the club's posture in these talks are entirely unrelated to the considerations with (J.T.) Miller and (Elias) Pettersson.
Miller was later traded to the New York Rangers, taking care of that issue.
Several contracts are coming off the books for the Red Wings this summer, including Patrick Kane, Jeff Petry, Jonatan Berggren, Alex Lyon, Ville Husso and Christian Fischer.
Could GM Steve Yzerman make a pitch to Boeser to join the Motor City? It could be feasible, considering the contracts that are expiring in the summer along with the expected rise in the salary cap.
