Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane reached 1,300 career points against the Capitals, and had the perfect response to the milestone afterward.

The Detroit Red Wings raced out to a 4-1 lead in the 1st period of last night's game against the Washington Capitals, eventually winning 4-2 to snap a four-game winless skid.

The win also gave coach Todd McLellan his 1st victory since being named head coach of the Red Wings in place of the terminated Derek Lalonde.

During the 1st period, forward Patrick Kane scored a goal with an assist, allowing him to become the 39th active player to reach 1,300 points scored in his Hall of Fame career.

Kane, who had mostly struggled to produce points this year, had the perfect response to the milestone.

I wish I got it a little bit sooner this year. Obviously, you play a lot of hockey, play a lot of games, your numbers have a chance to get up there, but nice to reach that milestone and do it on a play like that, Cat finishing off, is pretty fun, pretty exciting.

For coach McLellan, it's important for his players to have structure - but also to allow players like Kane to let their creativity show.

He's got a lot of hockey smarts that he can share with the coaching staff, too, and with his teammates. And I really felt like he's really committed to winning right now.

We have to allow them to be somewhat creative, especially power play-wise. They had some things going on tonight, some really good looks, and when you have that special mind, you have to allow it to come out.

And as long as the commitment's there on the other side, I have zero problem with that.
