Unfortunate health news for Detroit Red Wings prospect and Michigan State Spartans forward Red Savage, who is going to miss the rest of the year with an injury.

There's unfortunate injury news to report within the Detroit Red Wings organization, as draft selection Red Savage will miss the remainder of his season with the Michigan State Spartans due to an upper-body injury that's sidelined him the last 3 games.

Savage, who the Red Wings took in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, is playing in his senior season in East Lansing and has 11 points (5G, 6A) in 20 games played.

He transferred to Michigan State last season and later helped the school win their first Big Ten regular season and tournament title.

Head coach Adam Nightingale said that it's paramount that Savage get himself healthy, as he has a long career ahead of him.

At the end of the day, I respect what he was trying to do to continue to play but he's going to be playing this game for a long time and he's got to get healthy here. He's going to be flying out to get some work done.

We're going to miss him for sure. He's our captain and still can be our leader of our team. I think he's done a great job in the two years he's been here of helping us get this thing going in the right direction.

However, Nightengale doesn't believe that Savage's absence will affect the leadership group on the Spartans.

I think that's just the group in general. We've got four guys that wear letters but I don't think you have to wear a letter to be a leader on a team. It's definitely the whole group of guys that does a great job of it.
