General Manager Steve Yzerman prefers to ensure prospects have ample AHL experience before jumping to the NHL. This strategy addresses young players' common issues, such as defensive lapses and overzealous play.
Historically, this approach meant that players like Simon Edvinsson and Jonatan Berggren spent significant time with the Grand Rapids Griffins despite showing promise. Edvinsson, for instance, only saw extended NHL action toward the end of last season, while Berggren remained in the AHL, even though he was performing at a high level. Another promising prospect, Albert Johansson, spent two seasons in Grand Rapids without making the Red Wings' roster.
This season, however, marks a departure from the previous cautious strategy. Edvinsson, Jonatan Breggren, and Johansson are expected to secure spots on the NHL roster. Berggren, still an unsigned restricted free agent, is anticipated to replace the scoring lost from the departures of forwards like David Perron and Robby Fabbri. His impressive AHL performance last season, with 24 goals and 56 points, underscores his potential contribution.
Coach Derek Lalonde has highlighted the need for these young players to contribute defensively and offensively. Berggren, in particular, must improve his defensive game to secure a full-time role. With nine defensemen vying for spots, including Johansson and Edvinsson, the team faces tough decisions, possibly sending William Lagesson back to Grand Rapids.
The preseason will be pivotal for other young players like Marco Kasper, Nate Danielson, and Carter Mazur, who will have the opportunity to prove themselves. Lalonde is excited about the depth and potential of these young prospects and is optimistic about their impact on the team.
