Contract negotiations between the Utah Hockey Club and defenseman Victor Söderström have stalled, increasing speculation that the former first-round pick may leave for Europe.

Söderström, a restricted free agent, expressed frustration after playing just three NHL games last season, a sharp drop from the 30 games he played during the 2022-23 season with the Coyotes. Although the initial plan was for him to remain in North America, reports from Aftonbladet's Hans Abrahamsson and Tomas Rose suggest that this is now unlikely. Despite Utah's reluctance to part with Söderström, the defenseman seems unwilling to sign a new deal and is exploring overseas options.
Several teams in the Swiss League and the SHL have expressed interest in the 23-year-old defenseman, with his former team, Brynäs IF, reportedly close to finalizing a deal. Last season, Söderström played a career-high 62 games with the AHL's Tucson Roadrunners, recording nine goals and 23 assists. However, Utah's recent blue-line acquisitions of Mikhail Sergachev, John Marino, and Ian Cole have further diminished his chances of securing a roster spot. Moreover, Söderström is now waiver-eligible, which means he would need to clear waivers to be assigned to the minors, potentially making him available to other NHL teams.
The Vancouver Canucks could see this as an opportunity. General Manager Patrik Allvin has been targeting players in their early 20s who have not yet realized their potential. With the Canucks looking to strengthen their defense, Söderström could be a low-cost, high-reward addition as they approach training camp.
