Luke Hughes, a key defenseman for the New Jersey Devils, is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 NHL season due to a left shoulder injury sustained during offseason training.

The 21-year-old is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, but fortunately, surgery will not be required.

Hughes had an outstanding rookie season, leading all Devils defensemen with 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) in 82 games, and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Hughes has already accumulated 49 points (10 goals, 39 assists) in 84 regular-season games, and he also contributed two assists in three Stanley Cup Playoff appearances.

His absence will be a notable loss for the Devils as they begin the season. New Jersey is set to open their 2024-25 campaign against the Buffalo Sabres in Prague as part of the NHL Global Series Czechia on October 4-5. Hughes' brother, Jack Hughes, underwent shoulder surgery in April but is expected to be ready for training camp starting next week.
