Major update released on the health of injured Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson
The Detroit Red Wings lost defenseman Simon Edvinsson to injury, and it showed badly in their last two losses - but there's a major update on his condition.
The Detroit Red Wings were without defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who is playing in his 1st full NHL year, missed the last pair of games with an injury - and it showed, badly.
But the good news is that Edvinsson has returned to the ice for this morning's skate. Right now, his status for tonight's game against the visiting St. Louis Blues (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket) remains undetermined.
But the simple fact that he's back on the ice is a major step forward.
Edvinsson has 13 points (3G, 10A) and a +5 rating while averaging 20:44 of ice time per game while playing on the top pairing with Moritz Seider.
During his absence, the Red Wings turned to Albert Johansson and even William Lagesson, called up from the American Hockey League. Coach Derek Lalonde said it was a massive opportunity for Detroit's other blue liners:
Great opportunity for our other D to step up. When we had lost Simon on the West Coast trip in Anaheim (Nov. 15) we didn't handle it very well. We didn't perform great from the back end, and even the other night when he was out some things found us.
So, more minutes for our other D. They'll step up and looking forward for the opportunity for the other guys.
The results were....not good.
The Red Wings have fallen to second-to-last place in the Atlantic Division
The Red Wings were defeated in back-to-back games by the division foe Montreal Canadiens, who have since passed them in the standings; Detroit is now ahead of only the Buffalo Sabres in the Atlantic Division standings, who have lost 14 games in a row.
