The good news for underperforming Red Wings forward Joe Veleno is that he's scored in three straight games for the Red Wings.
The bad news is that not only were two of those games losses for the Red Wings, but that his overall production is actually worse than one of the all-time biggest busts in Red Wings franchise history.
As fans may remember, the Red Wings decided to select Filip Zadina with the 6th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. It seemed like a logical choice at the time, with many pundits expressing surprise that he wasn't selected earlier.
In fact, Zadina even promised to make teams like the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens pay for passing on him by "filling their net with pucks".
Not only did Zadina not fill any Detroit opponent's net with pucks on a routine basis, but he's not even playing in the NHL anymore, having never fulfilled his pre-Draft outlook of being a consistent 25-30 goal scorer.
Even worse is the fact that the very next pick after Zadina was University of Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes, who is now the captain of the Vancouver Canucks who won the Norris Trophy last year and also set a franchise record for assists by a defenseman.
For Veleno, who was taken later in Round 1 of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft along with Zadina, his career production is even lower than that of his former teammate.
Veleno has 70 points in 261 career games, while Zadina (now playing overseas) finished his NHL career with 91 points in 262 games.
That is....eye opening.
