As Alex Ovechkin is on pace to break Wayne Gretzky's regular season record, he has found himself in trouble for owing taxes to the Russian government.

In Russia, he is the owner an international hockey academy named after him and another company LLC Russian Machine who sells product under his name are actually in debt for the amount of 49 093 Ruble (a bit less than 550 USD).

This came as a surprise since we know Ovi isn't 500 bucks short. He had made over 100 million USD in career earnings.

UPDATE
Here's what a source close to Ovi told Match TV

"Ovechkin himself does not owe anything, this is a technical error. The individual entrepreneur does not conduct commercial activities; it only has patents for Alexander's trademarks. Our accountant is looking into this now"

Aware that this incident is minor, he once contemplated playing in the KHL like Ilya Kovalchuk after retiring from the NHL, but this could affect his decision. His contract is set to expire after the 2025-2026 season.
