The Canucks signed UFA forward Daniel Sprong to a one-year deal worth $975,000. Despite scoring 21 goals in 2022-23 for the Seattle Kraken and 18 for the Detroit Red Wings in 2023-24, Sprong will be joining his third team in three years and sixth since 2018-19.
The former 2nd-round pick from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft has struggled to find a long-term home despite providing solid secondary scoring. This highlights why Robertson's holdout might harm him more than the Maple Leafs.
Robertson's issue isn't about money, but the Leafs are not yielding to his trade request. Despite being an RFA, the leverage seems to favor Toronto. With the Leafs not addressing offensive depth this summer, Robertson has a prime opportunity in 2024-25 to showcase his offensive talents and solidify his position.
The Leafs' lack of moves could be strategic, as they will give Matthew Knies and Bobby McMann larger offensive roles. If Robertson stays, he will have ample chances within the top-9 and possibly the top-6, provided he stays healthy.
Sprong's new deal benefits Toronto by capping Robertson's market value. Robertson shouldn't cost the Leafs more than a million dollars this season, aiding their cap space management as they approach the trade deadline. With just 17 goals and 34 points in 87 games since 2020-21, Robertson's holdout should end soon, giving him a chance to prove himself and earn a more lucrative deal in the summer of 2025.
