SEG is close to a deal that will keep Utah HC in Salt Lake City
Having only been in the state for less than three months, the Utah HC is already close to finalizing an arena deal that will keep them in Salt Lake City for the next 30 years.
According to Sports Business Journal, Ryan Smith, owner of the NHL's Utah Hockey Club and NBA's Utah Jazz, is nearing an agreement with Salt Lake City to keep both teams at the Delta Center.
The deal includes $900 million in public funding to renovate the Delta Center and develop a surrounding sports and entertainment district. If either team plays a home game elsewhere, the city will fine them significantly. However, if the Utah Hockey Club participates in outdoor games or the NHL Global Series, it will likely be designated as the 'away' team to avoid fines, similar to the New York Rangers' arrangement with Madison Square Garden.
Ryan Smith's commitment to building a sustainable future for the franchise in Utah contrasts sharply with the unsuccessful tenure of Alex Meruelo, former owner of the Arizona Coyotes.
