One of the biggest names on the trade market is Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas, an RFA.

While the Vancouver Canucks were initially interested in acquiring him, recent developments suggest otherwise. According to Jeff Paterson in his latest mailbag on Canucks Army, the team's recent free-agent signings and financial commitments may have altered General Manager Patrik Allvin's approach. Paterson noted that acquiring Necas could involve a significant trade cost, and fitting his contract within their salary cap might be challenging.

Paterson commented :

"All that draft weekend smoke around Martin Necas and he still remains a Carolina Hurricane. For now. As part of the process, Carolina made the winger a qualifying offer to retain his rights, and over the weekend, Necas filed for salary arbitration. So we'll see where that goes."

Necas, 25, saw a 25% decline in point production during the 2023-24 season, recording 53 points (24 goals, 29 assists) in 77 games for the Hurricanes. He added nine points in 11 playoff games.

The key questions are whether the Hurricanes will move Necas this summer or re-sign him for the 2024-25 campaign and whether the Red Wings should pursue him.
