Despite widespread speculation of a reunion between Patrick Kane and the New York Rangers, it ultimately did not happen. Kane signed a one-year, $4 million contract to remain with the Detroit Red Wings.

Reports during free agency suggested that the Rangers were focused and determined to sign Kane, but Kane had other plans and re-signed with the Red Wings.

The question remains: why didn't Kane return to New York? TSN reporter Pierre LeBrun provided some insight:

«There was interest from teams like Buffalo, his hometown Sabres, the Rangers where he played before, and Montreal if it was a short-term deal, among other teams. Lots of interest in Patrick Kane. I think with Detroit, at the end of the day, he really enjoyed it there and he needed a compelling reason to leave.»

After recovering from hip surgery, the 35-year-old Kane joined Detroit and recorded an impressive 20 goals, 27 assists, and 47 points in 50 games. He seemed to click well with the Red Wings, especially with teammate Alex DeBrincat.
LeBrun also mentioned that Kane was looking for a longer-term contract, which the Rangers were unwilling to offer. Instead, the Rangers opted to trade for veteran forward Reilly Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins and signed center Sam Carrick.
