For NHL teams to know if a player's success from junior to the NHL will translate will always a tricky situation.

Over the years, scouts have had some right assumptions and some wrong ones in regards to Red Wing legends.
The Wings had a lot of faith in Steve Yzeman as they took him 4th overall but that is not to say they did not think there were some negatives. They thought he might be too small to play in the NHL and not physical enough which ended up being very wrong as he would go on to have a 21 year career.
Nikolas Lindstrom was not even scouted by the team, they did not say any good or bad about the legendary defenseman as he was only on their radar because they saw a few of his games and thought he was good, turns out they were right.
Nikolas Kronwall probably had the funniest report of all since he was seen as a defenseman with solid offensive abilities but they believed he lacked physical strength. This assessment could not be more wrong as Kronwall would go down as one of the best NHL hitters of all-time and forwards feared coming down his wing, especially in their own zone.
These reports show how a scout can spend a lot of time assessing a player but at the end of the day no one will really know until the players goes to the NHL and shows what he can do.
