The Detroit Red Wings earned a dramatic victory last night at Nationwide Arena against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a 5-4 final capped by Jonatan Berggren's game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in regulation.
He exited the penalty box (after serving Detroit's bench minor for delay of game after a failed coach's challenge), took a pass from Tyler Motte, and beat goaltender Elvis Merzlikins on a breakaway.
As always, longtime Detroit Red Wings television commentator Ken Daniels of FanDuel Sports Detroit had a pristine call of the events unfolding on the ice. As he always does, radio announcer Ken Kal of 97.1 The Ticket had the call and delivered it with his usual trademark excitement that's fired up fans for nearly three decades:
The Red Wings have won 3 straight games; Berggren is heating up as well, with goals in consecutive outings, both on breakaways.
Berggren said that he'd been hoping for a chance to get sprung on a breakaway attempt upon his exit from the penalty box.
Berggren scored the 1st goal of Tuesday's game at Little Caesars Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins, beating former teammate Alex Nedeljkovic with a near-identical shot:
