Red Wings' Todd McLellan explains failed coach's challenge gamble, which later ultimately paid off
New Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan explains his coach's challenge which was rejected, but ultimately paid off with a late goal from Jonatan Berggren.
All's well that ends well for the Detroit Red Wings!
They picked up their 3rd consecutive win thanks to a dramatic goal in the final minute of play against the Columbus Blue Jackets by Jonatan Berggren, who had just exited the penalty box.
Berggren had been selected by Red Wings Coach Todd McLellan to serve the penalty for delay of game after his coach's challenge for goalie interference on the Blue Jackets' tying goal was ultimately rejected after the on-ice officials reviewed the play.
While Blue Jackets forward James van Riemsdyk was in the crease, the officials ruled he didn't hinder Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot's ability to play his position; the goal stood and Columbus was given a power play, which Detroit killed off.
Berggren then scored the winning goal promptly after being released from the sin bin, taking a pass from Tyler Motte and beating Elvis Merzlikins on a breakaway.
McLellan took responsibility for the challenge, which appeared to backfire at first but ultimately paid off in a twist of fate in the end.
We have to decide in a fraction of a second. That decision was mine. It wasn't anybody else's. That's on the head coach. I made that decision and I was on the wrong end of it.
McLellan also was happy for Berggren, who scored his 2nd breakaway goal in as many games.
Happy for him.We punished him for the coach's sin, we sent him to the box, but he rewarded us with a win, so that's a good thing.
