The Detroit Red Wings dropped a disappointing 5-2 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs in Todd McLellan's debut, and Ben Chiarot clarified where responsibility lies.

Last night marked the debut of new Detroit Red Wings head Coach Todd McLellan, who was hired by general manager Steve Yzerman aong with new assistant coach Trent Yawney.

Meanwhile, now-former head coach Derek Lalonde and assistant coach Bob Boughner were dismissed from their posts.

But the Red Wings didn't get that immediate aching "bump" that many teams get. Leafs forward Mitch Marner scored his 3rd career hat trick en route to a 5-2 win.

While seeing a now-former head coach get terminated is never easy, defenseman Ben Chiarot knows that the onus is on the players to perform.

Individually we all have to perform better. Maybe get out of our comfort zone and do something we don't normally do, play a different style when things aren't going well. It's on us, on the guys in the room.

Meanwhile, McLellan said that the team was going to get started solving their issues in practice on Saturday.

You don't have to be a hockey expert, some of our entry coverage, some of our defensive zone parts of the play we have to get fixed, the penalty kill has been obvious for a little while.

We have to pick one (side) and get after it and for me, it's the defensive side after what I saw tonight.<.q>

From a coaching perspective it was exciting to be back out there again, but we have to work to do. That's fairly evident. The game allows us a roadmap. Now we know where we'll go to begin with tomorrow at practice.
