Things aren't going according to plan right now for the Detroit Red Wings and new head CoachTodd McLellan in his inaugural game behind the bench in Hockeytown.

While fans who packed Little Caesars Arena for tonight's game between the divisional foe Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs were hoping to see the traditional new couch "bounce", fans of Detroit will have to wait for another night.

The Maple Leafs are well on their way to a convincing victory over the Red Wings, taking a 5-0 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes of play.

Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, a pending unrestricted free agent, torched Detroit with his 3rd career hat trick; he scored twice in the 1st period before deflecting home the puck past goaltender Cam Talbot midway through the 2nd.

Adding insult to injury, defensemen Jeff Petry coughed up the puck with seconds remaining in the period, leading directly to a Leafs goal from Nicholas Robertson with 1.2 seconds left.

And just as they were in the closing seconds of Monday nights' 4-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues, frustrated Red Wings fans at Little Caesars Arena booed the club off the ice.

McLellan has already made a goaltending change, replacing Cam Talbot (who didn't get much help) with Alex Lyon.

McLellan is quickly learning that he and new assistant coach Trent Yawney have lots of work to do in their new situation; McLellan was signed to a multi-year contract by GM Steve Yzerman after the termination of Derek Lalonde, suggesting that he had this move up his sleeve for some time.
