Former Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill is currently assistant-coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning. But the San Jose Sharks have scheduled him to make a second interview for the head coach position.

This was updated by Elliott Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast. Additionally to previous news, San Jose Sharks assistant coach Ryan Warsofsky completed two interviews either, while Marco Sturm who was also interviewed, didn't make it to the second interview.

Despite being in a rebuilding phase, the Sharks coaching job is tempting for coaches because of their really good prospect pool. Plus, they have the number one draft pick and are expected to select Macklin Celebrini with it. They also drafted ex-Boston College player Will Smith with their fourth overall last season. Celebrini and Smith are really good propects at the center position, with Celebrini scoring 32 goals and 64 points in 38 games, and Smith putting 25 goals and 71 points in 41 games this season.

Jeff Blashill led the Red Wings from 2015 to 2022 and made the playoffs only once during his tenure. He was fired by GM Steve Yzerman in April 2022. Despite not really having playoff success, Blashill is respected for his communication skills. His career includes leading the Grand Rapids Griffins to an AHL championship in 2013 and leading Team USA to a bronze medal in the 2019 World Championship. After leaving Detroit, Blashill joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as an assistant-coach.
