The Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres aren't the only teams in the Eastern Conference who have struggled heavily of late - but what's surprising about this team is that they were considered bonafide Stanley Cup contenders.
The New York Rangers, who made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Final last year for the second time in three years, have somehow dropped eight of their last 10 games.
They've already made a monumental trade, sending captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and in return receiving a depth defenseman and a 4th round draft pick.
But is another top Rangers player on the block?
Mika Zibanejad, who has been with New York since being acquired from Ottawa in 2016, has fallen on hard times with his performance, and it may become necessary for him and the Rangers to part ways.
Per Responsible Gambler, Rangers general manager Chris Drury is letting other NHL clubs know that Zibanejad can be had for the right price.
Both Trouba and fellow Rangers veteran Chris Kreider were rumored to be on the trading block; with Trouba already having been moved, Zibanejad appears to have been thrust into the conversation of potentially being traded.
As you know, the Red Wings have a rich heritage of Swedish royalty in the NHL, and Zibanejad could be intrigued to don the Winged Wheel like so many of his great countrymen did before him.
However, the major obstacle for Zibanejad (like Trouba would have been) would be taking on his hefty $8.5 million AAV for the next several years; he's under contract through 2029.
