The Detroit Red Wings pulled out a miraculous comeback win over the division foe Buffalo Sabres last night, a 6-5 final score in the shootout to help end a five-game winless skid.
The story of the night initially was going to be the Red Wings allowing themselves to trail multiple times against the Sabres, who had gone winless in their previous six games on home ice.
But rookie Sebastian Cossa was inserted into the game by coach Derek Lalonde after starter Ville Husso struggled with only four saves on seven shots in the 1st period.
He allowed two quick goals, but settled down and finished with 12 saves, including a pair of key saves in the shootout and coming away with his 1st NHL win.
Cossa later explained that his family was probably nervous watching from home, but that it must have been as exciting a finish to the game for them as it was for him, and that they were going to be the first people he called.
Cossa became the only goaltender in NHL history to pick up his 1st NHL win after being inserted into a game in relief and emerging as the last goalie standing after the shootout.
Lalonde has not indicated who will start in goal on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, but there will be a large contingent of Red Wings fans who want Cossa to be able to build off what he accomplished last night and make his 1st start.
