Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde speaks out after potentially job-saving win over Sabres
Things were looking badly for the Detroit Red Wings during last night's game, but they pulled out a miraculous win to stave off what would have been a disastrous loss to the divisional foe Buffalo Sabres.
The Detroit Red Wings managed to stave off disaster against the divisional foe Buffalo Sabres last night, coming back for a 6-5 win in the shootout and getting goaltender Sebastian Cossa his 1st career NHL victory.
Things did not start well at all for Detroit, as Ville Husso allowed the first shot he faced on the night to beat him glove side from the right faceoff circle.
The Red Wings trailed 3-2 after 20 minutes, and 5-3 midway through the 3rd period. But goals from Andrew Copp (his second of the game) and Moritz Seider leveled the score, and both Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin scored in the shootout to end Detroit's winning streak while prolonging Buffalo's home winless skid to seven games.
Coach Derek Lalonde, who has been facing considerable scrutiny and calls for his job, voiced his appreciation from the balanced scoring that helped power Detroit to the win.
I thought we could get some offense tonight. Some of the things we've worked on and preached, but the guys had to go out and execute.
We got some balanced scoring throughout.
Derek Lalonde inserted Sebastian Cossa starting in the 2nd period
After Husso allowed three goals (two of them very questionable) on just seven shots in the 1st period, Lalonde briefly considered putting Cossa into the game right then and there.
But he later said he felt that would be unfair to Cossa, and instead elected to insert him for the start of the 2nd period.
I thought it would be a little unfair on Coss to do it with four minutes left.
So I wanted to get to the end of the [first] period. It was a pretty easy decision.
