Plenty of bad old habits returned for the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night against the Canadiens, and Derek Lalonde was frank in his assessment of the main issues.

A 4-3 loss caused plenty of frustration for the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night against the divisional and Original 6 foe Montreal Canadiens, took the 1st game of their season series.

Both teams face one another tomorrow night in Montreal.

The Red Wings failed to generate anything on their multiple power play opportunities, while the Habs not only scored the game-winning goal with the man advantage in the 3rd period, but also scored shorthanded.

Among the more frustrating aspects of the loss was the inability to cash in when it mattered most, especially late in the 3rd period with a Habs player in the penalty box; it was their golden chance to tie the game, but they fell short.

And for head coach Derek Lalonde,, his club losing the special teams was the main reason behind their failure to accumulate points in the standings.

Huge part of it. An 0-fer on the power play and they scored shorthanded, and they scored on the power play in the end. It was a huge part of the game, our inability to execute on special teams.

We have to be better with the puck. The margin for error is not there. We can't have lapses in our game and we have to be good on special teams and obviously tonight, we were not.

Patrik Laine scored the winning goal in the 3rd period while the Habs were on the power play, while Jake Evans scored shorthanded in the 1st period.

The Canadiens are now only 1 point behind the Red Wings. Will they overtake them in the standings soon?
