Among the new faces with the Detroit Red Wings this season signed by general manager Steve Yzerman is goaltender Cam Talbot, who had become somewhat of a journeyman in recent years.
Upon his arrival, the Red Wings became his fourth NHL team since 2021 (Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators, and Los Angeles Kings).
And while there were some misgivings over Yzerman signing a 37-year-old goalie to a multi-year contract, he's mostly put that conversation to rest thanks to his strong performances.
In fact, Talbot finds himself ranked inside of the top 10 of his fellow NHL goaltenders in goals saved above expected:
Prior to the end of last night's game, Talbot was also ranked second overall in the NHL with a .944 save percentage at even strength.
His clutch performances and timely saves have earned him the respect and admiration of his teammates, starting with Patrick Kane.
In October, following his impressive 42-save shutout of the Nashville Predators, he became the third goaltender in Red Wings history over the age of 37 to record a shutout, joining Dominik Hasek and Ed Giacomin.
Talbot is in the first year of a two-year $2.5 million AAV deal, and is seen by many as being a bridge goaltender to hold the fort until prospect Sebastian Cossa is ready for NHL action.
