Drafting prospects in the NHL is not an exact science. GM's hope their selections find even moderate success.

The Detroit Red Wings, under GM Steve Yzerman, have made it clear they prefer defensively responsible 200-foot players with high-end upside, emphasizing size, grit, and energy. This preference explains why Yzerman selected forward Max Plante in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
The 5-foot-11, 177-pound Plante spent the past two seasons with the US National Team Development Program and has shown potential as a highly skilled playmaker. Last season, he recorded 61 points (15 goals and 46 assists) in 51 games. Plante, who grew five inches in two years, attributes his improvement to increased speed and pace.
Plante's hockey lineage is strong. His father, Derek Plante, a former NHL player, won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. Max plans to join his brother at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, continuing the family tradition.
Plante is known for his vision and playmaking ability. His coach, Nick Fohr, praised his ability to see plays develop. Dan Marr, Central Scouting's director, highlighted Plante's competitive nature and determination to win. These traits align with Yzerman's vision for the Red Wings.
While Plante was a surprising pick at 47th overall, his potential and attributes make him a reasonable gamble. The Red Wings hope his passion for the game will help him develop into a complete player in the coming years.
