Detroit Red Wings prospect ready to take big steps
Max Plante, selected No. 47 overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, credits his hockey upbringing to his family's influence.
As the son of former NHL player and current Chicago Blackhawks assistant coach Derek Plante, Max was raised with a strong foundation in the sport.
Growing up in Duluth, Minnesota, Max Plante has vivid memories of skating with his father and two brothers, Zam and Victor, on their family's backyard rink.:
«My dad was probably better than us,» Max reminisced, «but we put up a good fight.» The support from his father and grandfather, Bruce who coached the local high school team nurtured Max's passion for hockey.
Red Wings Assistant Director of Player Development Dan Cleary praised Max as a «little sponge» with a competitive edge and a genuine love for the game. Max had a standout 2023-24 season with the U.S. National Team Development Program's U-18 club, recording 61 points in 51 games. His recent growth, from 5-6 and 127 pounds to 5-11 and 177 pounds, reflects his dedication to improving his strength and speed.
Plante's confidence surged after a strong showing at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase, where he registered four points in three games. This experience is expected to benefit him as he starts his freshman season at the University of Minnesota Duluth this fall.
