At 29, Motte brings experience and depth to the Red Wings lineup. Last season, he played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring six goals and three assists for nine points in 69 regular-season games. He also contributed a goal in Tampa's first-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers.
Over his eight NHL seasons, Motte has accumulated 49 goals and 41 assists for 90 points in 400 career regular-season games. His career includes stints with the Lightning, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Chicago Blackhawks. Originally drafted by the Blackhawks in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Motte played three seasons with the University of Michigan, where he excelled, particularly in his final season with 32 goals and 24 assists in 38 games.
This signing is part of a series of moves by the Red Wings. On Monday, the team added goaltenders Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell, forwards Christian Fischer and Sheldon Dries, and defensemen Erik Gustafsson and William Lagesson. Additionally, the Red Wings re-signed Patrick Kane to a one-year contract with a base cap hit of $4 million. Kane, who scored 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games last season, remains a key player as Detroit aims to end its eight-season playoff drought.
