Two forwards on Professional Tryout Offers (PTO) at training camp, Austin Watson and Isaac Ratcliffe are being closely evaluated for their ability to bring grit to the lineup.
Lalonde emphasized the need for controlled aggression, believing every team can benefit from having tough players who can protect skilled teammates. Watson, a seasoned NHL enforcer, exemplifies this with his willingness to drop the gloves. Last season, he recorded seven fights and accumulated 93 penalty minutes in 33 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat, who played alongside Watson in Ottawa, praised his no-nonsense attitude, highlighting his relentless forechecking and physicality.
Although less experienced at the NHL level, Ratcliffe also brings toughness, having led the 2018-19 Guelph Storm in both goals and penalty minutes. While he has only played 10 NHL games, his aggressive style could provide Detroit with much-needed physicality.
The Red Wings, a team known for their skilled forwards, had just 11 fights last season. Lalonde sees the need for a tougher presence on the ice to make skilled players feel more secure. While assessing Watson and Ratcliffe's fit, Detroit aims to balance finesse with a more rugged, physical approach.
