After completing a three-year, $13.5 million contract, Hoffman hasn't found a new team since July 1. His recent seasons have been underwhelming, but Staple believes Hoffman still has potential, especially if the Red Wings miss out on Max Pacioretty.
While Hoffman may no longer be suited for top-tier teams with structured playstyles, Staple suggests that he could add depth to Detroit's third line, addressing their scoring issues from last season. Hoffman recorded 23 points in 66 games with the San Jose Sharks last season, bringing his career totals to 587 points in 745 games.
Meanwhile, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is optimistic about the team's playoff prospects, believing they can compete if they stay healthy and their goaltending holds up. He sees the current roster as an improvement over last year's, potentially better suited to player roles. Despite not making the playoffs since 2015-16, Yzerman is satisfied with the young core of Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, and Dylan Larkin, along with recent additions like Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko.
Yzerman's long-term plan is to build a core that can reach the playoffs and eventually contend for a Stanley Cup. The Red Wings will kick off their 2024-25 season at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 10.
