Hall of Famer Bobby Hull has been posthumously diagnosed with CTE, becoming the latest late NHL player revealed to have had the brain disease.
NHL Hall of Famer Bobby Hull was posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is caused by repeated blows to the head; the finding was announced by the Concussion Legacy Foundation.
The father of former Detroit Red Wings forward and Hall of Famer Brett Hull, the elder Hull now becomes the most prominent former player to have been diagnosed with the disease, albeit after his passing.
Hull's wife
Deborah Hull explained that Bobby insisted on donating his brain after his passing to assist in research of the illness.
Seeing the pain and heartache suffered by his lifetime friend Stan Mikita's family, Bobby felt strongly no other family should have to endure CTE. He insisted on donating his brain, feeling as though it was his duty to help advance research on this agonizing disease.
Hull's brain was donated to the UNITE Brain Bank at Boston University's CTE Center. He becomes the latest late NHL player to be diagnosed with the disease; the list also includes Derek Boogard and Bob Probert.
Meanwhile, CLF CEO Chris Nowinski blasted NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for his refusal to acknowledge the link between CTE and repeated blows to the head.
NHL families deserve to know that CTE can be a consequence of the head impacts they receive while playing the game. The NHL still shamelessly refuses to acknowledge this scientific truth, so we hope this message reaches current players so that they, at a minimum, can play with informed consent.
