Jakub Zboril, once a first-round pick by the Boston Bruins in 2015, never quite fulfilled the potential expected of him, with injuries such as his torn ACL playing a major role. Now at 27, he's looking for another shot in the NHL after a season spent primarily in the AHL with Providence and Cleveland.
While he had 13 assists in 46 regular-season AHL games, his defensive play seemed to waver, as indicated by his minus-seven rating. His presence in the Calder Cup Playoffs, with four points in 14 games, shows he still has something to offer, but whether it's enough to crack an NHL roster remains to be seen.
As for Michael Hutchinson, he's a veteran goalie who played in the Detroit Red Wings organization last season. His .892 save percentage over 32 AHL games with Grand Rapids is serviceable but far from elite, so he'll also face an uphill battle to secure a spot with the Devils.
Both players will need strong showings at training camp to earn contracts for the 2024-25 season, likely on a two-way deal at the league minimum salary. It will be worth watching how they perform and whether either can stick with the New Jersey Devils.
