Former Detroit Red Wings writer Keith Gave, who covered the team for years during their glory era, has suggested that Todd McLellan could earn himself a major award if the team continues its current trajectory of success.
It's been an incredible reversal of fortunes for the
Detroit Red Wings, who were tied for last place in the Eastern Conference at the Christmas break. On December 26, the Red Wings dismissed Derek Lalonde after a 13-17-4 start and hired Todd McLellan as his replacement.
To say that the Red Wings have risen from the ashes would be an understatement.
Essentially left for dead at the time of McLellan's hiring, the Red Wings have put together the best record in the NHL since December 29 and now occupy a Wild Card postseason position.
They were defeated 5-2 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in McLellan's 1st game back in Detroit on December 27, though he hadn't had time to conduct a full, official practice.
Former Red Wings writer Keith Gave, who covered the team throughout their glory years and was instrumental in Detroit's tapping into the Russian talent market, has suggested that McLellan be named the recipient of the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's top coach if the Red Wings do qualify for the postseason.
If the Detroit Red Wings wind up in the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring, then Todd McClellan should be the runaway winner of the Jack Adam's award as Coach of the Year. This team was dead and buried by the time he took over. A stunning reversal of fortune.
It's hard to argue with McLellan's accomplishments so far as head coach of the Red Wings, considering the position in the NHL standings that they now occupy compared to when he took over in late December.
Who else agrees that McLellan should garner serious consideration for the Jack Adams Trophy as the NHL's best coach should the Red Wings claim their 1st postseason berth since 2016 later this spring?
