The Detroit Red Wings have sunk even lower in the standings with their latest loss, this time a 2-1 defeat by the Colorado Avalanche.

It's hard not to get disillusioned after the Detroit Red Wings have lost for the 5th straight game.

Adding to the already upsetting reality that the Red Wings may be headed toward yet another non-playoff year is that the last five losses have all been by a single goal.

Defenseman Moritz Seider, who has been named an alternate captain, in Detroit's dressing room right now amidst this latest stretch of losing hockey.

"I mean, no one is happy in the locker room. Why should we? We're losing games that are winnable and we just can't find ways to get it done. That's really frustrating.

We shouldn't be lying to ourselves. We need to be better. It shouldn't drag us down, though.

The Red Wings fell behind 2-0 thanks to goals from Valeri Nichushkin and Cale Makar, the latter of which was the latest power play goal that Detroit's NHL-worst penalty killing unit failed to defend against.

Lucas Raymond got his stick on the puck when Dylan Larkin threw the puck on net in the 2nd period, giving the Red Wings a spark.

But that spark flickered out in the 3rd period when they only managed a single shot on Alexandar Georgiev until Ville Husso was pulled for a 6th skater with just over two minutes left in regulation.

The Detroit Red Wings have now lost 5 straight one-goal games

The latest loss by the Red Wings has caused them to lose even further ground in the Eastern Conference and their division, especially after the Ottawa Senators won their second straight by beating the Nashville Predators.

Additionally, the Montreal Canadiens have caught fire thanks to the major boost to their lineup with the return of Patrik Laine from injury.

The Red Wings must figure things out in a hurry if they want to avoid a 9th straight year without the playoffs.
