The term "Michigan Man" often resonates in local sports circles, but it holds little weight for Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, who prioritizes player skills over origins.

Despite adding former Michigan Wolverines Tyler Motte, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, and captain Dylan Larkin, Yzerman insists their collegiate ties are coincidental.
"We don't care where the players are from," Yzerman stated.

He wants talent over geography. However, he acknowledges the marketing benefits of having local players like Sheldon Dries, Jeff Petry and Alex DeBrincat on the roster.
Yzerman also notes that the prevalence of Michigan players underscores the state's hockey strength.
"It shows the strength of hockey in the state of Michigan and in the Detroit area," he said, highlighting the local talent making it to the NHL and adding a bonus for the team.
