Red Wings coach Todd McLellan reveals Justin Holl came clean to him after brutal error on Tuesday
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Justin Holl committed a brutal turnover during Tuesday's loss to the Sharks, and came clean about it during practice to Todd McLellan.
For the 1st time since Dec. 27, the Detroit Red Wings were defeated; they were beaten 6-3 on Tuesday night by the lowly San Jose Sharks, who have now won 3 of their last 4 matchups against the Red Wings dating back to last year.
Part of the loss on Tuesday included a brutal giveaway by defenseman Justin Holl in front of his own net, leading to San Jose's 5th goal of the night just moments after Lucas Raymond had scored to bring the Red Wings back to within a goal.
Coach Todd McLellan blasted the performance of Holl, whom he later benched for the rest of the 3rd period, as "terrible" following the game and said that he'd make no secret of that to Holl in practice the following day.
Ahead of tonight's game against the Florida Panthers, McLellan explained that Holl was up front about the mistake.
He's a veteran player. He holds himself accountable. I know we're singling out one individual, but there were many others that didn't play very well. Everyone had some sort of conversation, whether it was just a casual skate-by or whether it was a sit-down.
Relationships aren't only when it's all grand and everything is good. You're on a family vacation. Sometimes the best relationships are at home when things aren't going real well, kids are acting up and you and your wife have to discipline or provide some guidance for them. It's no different than being around a team.
McLellan isn't shy about openly holding players accountable for their lackluster play, and Justin Holl should be better off for it.
