Uwe Krupp, one of the biggest free-agent busts in Red Wings history, lands a new hockey job
Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Uwe Krupp, who is one of the biggest free-agent busts in team history, has landed a new hockey job.
Detroit Red Wings fans still remember the all-time bust that defenseman Uwe Krupp was during his time with the organization.
Krupp, whose playing career ended in 2003 after a brief tenure with the Atlanta Thrashers, has been named the new head coach of HC Lugano in Switzerland.
Club president Luca Gianinazzi had the following statement after the firing of Luca Gianinazzi, who Krupp replaced:
This decision is painful for me, even on a personal level. Several times this season, it seemed like we had the strength to bounce back. However, after the last defeat against Fribourg, the team no longer showed grit or character, and the situation deteriorated to the point of making this step inevitable.
He later became coach of the Germany men's national ice hockey team, coaching them during the 2006 Turin Olympics and 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Krupp has also coached for the German club Eisbären Berlin as well as HC Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic.
Uwe Krupp signed with the Red Wings in 1999, but became one of the all-time busts in franchise free agency history
Krupp, who scored the Stanley Cup winning goal for the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, joined the Red Wings through free agency in the summer of 1998; he signed a 4-year contract.
However, he missed all of 1999-2000 and 2000-01 with a back injury. He drew controversy after the organization became aware that he had been dogsledding while he was supposed to be rehabilitating his injury; they suspended him without pay.
He later returned and played a handful of games for the team in 2001-02, even suiting up briefly during the postseason that eventually resulted in the team's 10th Stanley Cup win. But his name was not included on the Cup because he didn't appear in the required amount of games that year.
